Veterans, newcomer elected to Atlanta Radio Club executive committee

Four familiar faces and a newcomer comprise the Atlanta Radio Club’s 2011-2012 executive committee, elected at the club’s August meeting.

Returning for his second term as president is Bert Bruner, KE4FOV. First licensed in 1993, Bruner previously served as club treasurer, and he’s a big fan of VHF and UHF FM for its “conversational nature.” He’s also been active with public service work via HamWatch in north Fulton County. Off the air, Bruner is a network architect for Alliant Health Solutions. He’s been married to Becky, KJ4CMT, for more than 28 years.

Atlanta Radio Club, Coke special-events station, in August QST

Andy Dickerson, KD4UKW, spotted the Atlanta Radio Club in the August 2011 issue of QST Magazine. Andy wrote in the club's Yahoo Group: "The August issue has a color photo of Harold (Hawkins), KD8DVY, and Steve (Vogel), W4PSV, at the operating desk."

This was one of three pictures submitted to the ARRL publication from the K0K event. For those that don't remember, the ARC joined with Coca-Cola to put on the K0K special event in May, with Saturday operations on the grounds of the World of Coke. More than 500 contacts were made over the weekend and over 100 QSL requests were received for the special event. led by club vice-president, Newton White, N4EWT.

From the archives: ARC 2-meter repeater gets permission to move antenna into NationsBank spire

The Atlanta Radio Club received a major Christmas present in 1993: permission to move the antenna for the club's flagship 2-meter repeater into the spire of the Bank of America Building, at that time known as the NationsBank Building.

The club member responsible for getting it done was Jim Altman, N4UCK (now W4UCK), then club repeater manager and now ARRL Georgia Assistant Section Manager. The 146.82 MHz repeater today has some of the best coverage in the Southeast and is a major part of the Skywarn network. This article was published in The Atlanta Ham in 1994.

The antenna for the 146.82 MHz repeater will move into the spire of the NationsBank building "probably in a couple of months," according to repeater manager Jim Altman, N4UCK — if the club will fund custom-building an antenna that can be shared with a yet-to-be-named commercial user.

Altman secured permission for the arrangement from NationsBank and Cousins Properties, owners of the building, on Dec. 22.

From the archives: ARC secretary writes about adventures at legendary border station XER

One of the joys of belonging to the Atlanta Radio Club over the years was meeting so many interesting people. One of the most unique was Herb Beadle, N4MNR, an Episcopal minister, longtime club secretary and, sadly, now a silent key. Beadle exercised his droll sense of humor through the meeting minutes he contributed to the Atlanta Ham. The written minutes were usually far more entertaining than the meeting itself. He also wrote a newsletter to friends called "Collar Off," about whatever happened to interest him. If he were still alive, Beadle would no doubt be blogging away on the Internet today.

The best thing he ever wrote, though, was his first-person account of seeing a live broadcast at XER, the legendary Mexican border station from the 1930s. (For more information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XER-AM ) This was first published in The Atlanta Ham in 1994. Apocryphal? Maybe. But it's damned funny anyway. Enjoy:
